RTÉ Digital – Can you help us to innovate?

Posted on October 17, 2012 by Caroline Stephens

By Tom Grealis, Director of Production and Operations, RTÉ Digital

In his book ‘From Gutenberg to Zuckerberg: What You Really Need to Know About the Internet’, author John Naughton argues that the internet can best be understood as an eco-system.

RTÉ’s primary contribution to that eco-system is content. And here in RTÉ Digital we want to make that content available on as many digital platforms and devices as is realistically achievable.

That aim is at the heart of our digital strategy (see it on this blog site) and to achieve it we must continue to innovate in every aspect of our business – our services, our products, our systems, our practices, our people, and our culture.

As outlined in our strategy , RTÉ Digital wants to meet audience needs (we want to keep you satisfied), to innovate (to introduce fresh thinking and new approaches), to grow revenue (we need more cash to keep developing and evolving to meet your needs), to integrate social media into our relevant activities (we want to use social-media tools to enhance your experience), to support leadership in Ireland’s digital economy (we want to continue to work with external partners), and to have a new digital organisational culture in RTÉ (we aim to cultivate a digital focus in all aspects of our business).

So now that you know what we are trying to achieve, what is it that you are trying to achieve? Do we have mutual goals? Can we help you to help us? Can you help us to help you?

Digital start-ups are of particular interest to us, but you don’t have to be running your own company to have something valuable to contribute to the digital agenda. But you do need to be digitally-savvy, to be thinking digital, being digital, living digital, as well as being energised and motivated by the opportunities for content-provision in the digital realm.

We believe that collaboration is the best way of achieving the goals set out above, and we are interested in engaging with like-minded companies and individuals.

Are you working on something that you think we’ll be interested in? Have you an idea that you believe could make a worthwhile contribution to the digital media landscape? If so, and if you’re interested in talking to us, then we’d like to hear from you.

We will not be able to respond to everyone and everything. And realistically we will only be able to prioritise and pursue a fraction of correspondence that we might receive. But we will certainly do our best to open up a meaningful dialogue on where collaboration opportunities may exist, and to try to build on those opportunities so that we can continue to enhance our digital products and services for our audiences.

If you’re interested, you can email us at digital.innovation@rte.ie. We look forward to hearing from you.

What are the reasons for RTE remaining with terrestrial based transmission only?
Why do RTE not transmit on staellite like every almost other TV station in Europe?
There are many very poor reception areas in Ireland and it would seem that satellite would overcome this problem. Why are we not using it?
I would much prefer to do away with the rooftop aerial and use the satellite dish only.

I presume I will at least get and e-mail reply?

Hi Barry – I will ask our TV folk to respond to you and get back – sincere apologies for the delay.
