Bláthnaid speaks about health scare

In the new issue of the RTÉ Guide, 'The Afternoon Show' presenter Bláthnaid Ní Chofaigh speaks about her recent major health scare and operation.

Ní Chofaigh had emergency abdominal surgery in April after feeling unwell while at work.

"On the show I didn't eat anything," she says, "which is very unusual for me! By the end, I couldn't stand upright."

Having visited her GP after the end of that day's show, she was then driven to hospital by him and was having surgery 40 minutes later for a severely twisted bowel.

She continues: "If untreated, the problem could have done serious damage and I may have had to have part of my bowel removed."

Ní Chofaigh adds: "I've been lucky. The main thing is that I'm fixed. I'm relieved to know what's been wrong with me. But I did go through major surgery, so it'll take time for me to recuperate fully."

You can read the full interview, which includes Ní Chofaigh talking about her recuperation, the good wishes she has received from the public and her future plans, in this week's RTÉ Guide, on sale now.
