Glitter sentenced to three years in jail

A court in Vietnam this morning sentenced Gary Glitter to three years in jail on Friday for molesting two girls, aged eleven and twelve when he stayed at Vietnamese resort Vung Tau last year.

Sentencing 61-year-old Glitter, whose real name is Paul Gadd, Judge Hoang Thanh Tung said: "His lewd acts have compromised the dignity of the Vietnamese people, law and common sense, and therefore it is necessary to punish him."

The former singer protested his innocence, telling reporters as he was lead away: "I haven't done anything - I am innocent. It is a conspiracy by you know who."

Glitter must also pay the families of his victims 5m Vietnamese Dong, about ¤260.

He could be considered for release next November, after he serves a third of his sentence, which includes the four months he spent in custody while awaiting trial.
