Irish based author in Whitbread honours

The Irish based author, Kate Thompson, has won the Whitbread Children's book award and is now among five writers nominated for the prestigious Whitbread literary award.

The finalists were selected from 476 entries.

Kate Thompson's book, 'The New Policeman', is about a teenage boy living in the west of Ireland who visits the land of eternal youth in search of time.

Ms Thompson was born in Belfast and lives in Kinvara. She is married to the actor Malcolm Douglas.

Bookies have made Ali Smith the favourite to win the overall Whitbread award for her novel 'Accidental' about a chance encounter which alters a family forever.

The winner will be announced on 24 January, 2006.

The book is repetitive and slow initially. However, some may enjoy the story-telling, which is strong at times. I'm left wondering if this was hastily thrown together for the Christmas market.
