New Maeve Binchy painting unveiled

A specially commissioned portrait of Irish author Maeve Binchy has been unveiled at the National Gallery of Ireland.

The painting, by Dublin-born artist Maeve McCarthy, is the sixth in a series of commissioned portraits for the National Gallery's collection.

The portrait depicts Binchy in her converted attic workroom, which she shares with her husband, writer Gordon Snell. Pictures, books and photographs surround Binchy and her husband appears in the background.

The painting goes on display at the National Gallery from today, 25 October. Admission to the gallery is free.
