RTÉ documentary wins major US award

RTÉ television documentary 'When You Say Four Thousand Goodbyes' has won the top award at this year's Intercom Film Festival in Chicago.

The documentary explored the work of Dubliner Dr Mike Meegan, who has spent the past 25 years fighting poverty and diseases, including AIDS, malaria and TB, in African villages.

'When You Say Four Thousand Goodbyes' is set to receive The Gold Hugo for the Best Production at the 41st annual competition for film and television programmes.

The documentary, which was presented by RTÉ's western correspondent Jim Fahy, was produced by Caroline Bleahen. The cameraman was Michael Lee.

The award is due to be presented at a ceremony in Chicago on 9 October.
