Parker speaks about suicide attempt

Ex-'EastEnders' star Chris Parker has revealed he attempted suicide in despair over rumours he was gay.

In an interview with OK magazine, Parker said: "I really wanted it to work. It was never a cry for help - I'd just had enough."

The 21-year-old, who played Spencer Moon in the BBC soap, had learned a newspaper was about to print claims by a dancer that he had invented a kiss-and-tell story to hide the truth about his sexuality.

Determined to kill himself, he packed a bag with kitchen knives and paracetamol and checked into a London hotel last November.

"I'd had such a successful year and I felt as though it was all about to go down the drain - I just wanted an easy way out - it's a coward's way out but I just wanted out," he said

Parker's life was saved when he called two friends who dashed to the hotel.
