Shortlist for BAFTAs now announced
The nominees for the British Academy Film Awards have been announced, with Martin Scorsese's 'The Aviator' leading the shortlist with 14 nominations.
Among the film's nominations are: Best Film, Best Director (Martin Scorsese), Best Actor (Leonardo DiCaprio), Best Supporting Actor (Alan Alda) and Best Supporting Actress (Cate Blanchett).
'The Aviator' also received nominations for Best Original Screenplay, Cinematography, Editing, Achievement in Film Music, Production Design, Costume Design, Sound, Achievement in Special Visual Effects, Make-up and Hair.
The other nominees for Best Film are: 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind', 'Finding Neverland', 'The Motorcycle Diaries' and 'Vera Drake'.
Marc Forster ('Finding Neverland'), Michael Gondry ('Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind'), Mike Leigh ('Vera Drake') and Michael Mann ('Collateral') join Scorsese on the shortlist for the David Lean Award for Best Director.
DiCaprio is joined on the Best Actor shortlist by Gael Garcia Bernal ('The Motorcycle Diaries'), Jamie Foxx ('Ray'), Jim Carrey ('Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind') and Johnny Depp ('Finding Neverland').
Kate Winslet is nominated twice in the Best Actress category for her performances in 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' and 'Finding Neverland'; Charlize Theron ('Monster'), Imelda Staunton ('Vera Drake') and Ziyi Zhang ('House of Flying Daggers') complete the nominees.
Golden Globe winners Clive Owen and Natalie Portman are both nominated for their performances in 'Closer' in the Best Supporting Actor and Actress categories.
Owen joins Alan Alda ('The Aviator'), Phil Davis ('Vera Drake'), Jamie Foxx ('Collateral') and Rodrigo de la Serna ('The Motorcycle Diaries') on the shortlist.
Portman joins Cate Blanchett ('The Aviator'), Julie Christie ('Finding Neverland'), Heather Craney ('Vera Drake') and Meryl Streep ('The Manchurian Candidate') on the Best Supporting Actress shortlist.
The nominees for the Alexander Korda Award for the Outstanding British Film of the Year are: 'Dead Man's Shoes', 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban', 'My Summer of Love', 'Shaun of the Dead' and 'Vera Drake'.
'Bad Education', 'The Chorus', 'House of Flying Daggers', 'The Motorcycle Diaries' and 'A Very Long Engagement' are the nominees for Best Foreign Language Film.
The nominees for Film of the Year, which is voted on by the public are: 'Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason', 'The Day After Tomorrow', 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban', 'I, Robot', 'The Incredibles', 'Scooby Doo 2', 'Shark Tale', 'Shrek 2', 'Spider-Man 2' and 'Troy'.
The winners will be announced on 12 February in London.
