Halliwell paid over ¤700k for date

Geri Halliwell is to pick up a cheque for over ¤700,000 for escorting a billionaire playboy to this year's Vienna opera ball.

Businessman Richard Lugner invites celebrities to the ball every year to attract media attention.

The former Spice Girl will follow in the footsteps of Pamela Anderson,  Andie MacDowell and Sophia Loren who have also partnered the 72-year-old to the annual Austrian society event.

Speaking at a press conference Lugner said: "I chose Geri because of her wonderful smile. I'm delighted to have such a star guest as Ginger Spice, who has made such a successful name for herself."

The ball, the most prestigious event of Vienna's society calendar, takes place on 3 February.

As is the nature with albums as diverse as this in style and contributors, 'Plastic Beach' can be patchy in parts, but the sheer versatility and depth of this sprawling work are its saviours.

Beautifully recorded without taking the grit out of the songs
