Actor John Drew Barrymore dies, aged 72

Actor John Drew Barrymore, father of Hollywood actress Drew Barrymore, has died. He was 72.

Drew Barrymore issued a statement yesterday confirming that her father had died, but no details about the time or place of his death have yet emerged.

In a statement, issued through her spokesperson Chris Miller, Drew Barrymore said: "He was a cool cat. Please smile when you think of him."

Barrymore, who was the son of acting legend John Barrymore, was renowned for his rebellious streak, which led to many colourful encounters with family, friends and the law. In later years, however, he was reported to have lived a reclusive life.

Barrymore starred in a number of Hollywood films during his sporadic acting career, including 'The Big Night' and 'While the City Sleeps'.
