Bird, Flatley get honorary degrees

RTÉ's Chief News Correspondent, Charlie Bird and entertainer Michael Flatley were among those who received an honorary degree from UCD today as part of the university's 150th anniversary celebrations.

A total of 19 people from politics, business, journalism, sport and the arts were conferred at the O'Reilly Hall on UCD's Belfield campus.

Sculptor Imogen Stuart, chairwoman of the Abbey Theatre, Eithne Healy and artist Anne Madden will receive their degrees alongside former European Commissioner David Byrne, former US congressman Bruce Morrison and former sports stars Mick O'Dwyer, Kevin Heffernan, Willie John McBride and Kevin Moran.

UCD cited their "exceptional contribution to Irish society and their impact on the world stage" as reasons why these people had been chosen to receive honorary degrees.

It won't stick in the memory like, say, a 'Monsters, Inc' or 'Lilo and Stitch', but 'Astro Boy' is a fairly quick 90 minutes.

Some brilliant moments but sadly, for a film about losing one's virginity, it doesn't go all the way.
