Piper picked for Dr Who's sidekick

British singer and actress Billie Piper has been cast as Doctor Who's assistant for the new BBC series.

Piper, who is married to former DJ Chris Evans, will take the role of Rose Tyler alongside Christopher Eccleston in this ninth version of the cult sci-fi series.

She made her television debut last year in the BBC drama serial 'Canterbury Tales: The Miller's Tale' and also appeared in recent British boxing comedy 'The Calcium Kid'.

Piper said that she was "absolutely thrilled to be playing the part of Rose Tyler."

The new 13-episode series is due to be shown on BBC One early next year.
