Coldplay - Live 2003

Rating 3

EMI - 2003 - 50 minutes

Exuberance you can really feel, unforced camaraderie, idiotic dancing - and that's just onstage. What greets Coldplay - and you in front of it - is the devotion reserved for bands who are twice as big, have three times as many songs and know the stadium textbook off by rote.

Recorded in Sydney in July, 'Live' is a superior shot DVD, let down by its extras. The gig itself is faultless, but the bonus CD of the same show just trims a few songs (new track 'Moses' is here but not 'Trouble ' and 'The Scientist') off the setlist - and robs you of the chance to see Chris Martin's 'endearitating' stage moves. Why not an audio recording of a different show like the Foo Fighters did so successfully on their 'Anywhere But Home' DVD?

There's also a 40-minute tour diary, where the only major insight is that 'Trouble' sounds good speeded up but which should probably be watched by fans everywhere just to confirm that backstage at concerts really is the most boring place to be.

Gorillaz - Plastic Beach

Rating 4

As is the nature with albums as diverse as this in style and contributors, 'Plastic Beach' can be patchy in parts, but the sheer versatility and depth of this sprawling work are its saviours.

Beautifully recorded without taking the grit out of the songs
