Louis le Brocquy exhibition for Crawford

A selection of works from Louis le Brocquy's 'Procession' series will be on view in Cork's Crawford Municipal Art Gallery from this Saturday, 11 October.

Born in Dublin in 1907, le Brocquy is a largely self-taught artist who is recognised as one of the most accomplished Irish artists working today.

This exhibition will represent the first opportunity to see such a wide selection of the 'Processions" series in Ireland.

In 1954, le Brocquy painted 'Children in a Wood', inspired by the 17th century Dutch artist Nicolaes Maes. In 1962 he made a similar work, 'Procession with Lilies', which was prompted by a photograph of children at a religious procession from 1939. These two works inspired a further series of painting on the same theme in the 1980s and 1990s.

They demonstrate le Brocquy's continuing interest in the group of figures in contrast to the isolated individual so prevalent in his practice since the 1960s

The exhibition will run from 11 October to 15 November in the Crawford Municipal Art Gallery, Cork and will then be shown at the Taylor Galleries in Dublin from 20 November until 13 December.
