Don't be alarmed by any reports that Turin Brakes have ditched strumming for big rock, you'll bust your speakers trying to find what hasn't happened. What has however, is that their acoustic fuzziness has taken on a West Coast cool, which has given them more depth.
Made in LA with Beck/Air producer Tony Hoffer, 'Ether Song' will follow the lead of their debut 'The Optimist' and quietly work its way into people's lives and then refuse to get out. With the exception of single 'Average Man, it takes time for their takes on day-in day-out to tighten their grip - and you could come away thinking it's an album hung up on creating a mood instead of making a memory.
But if they can find more haunting material like 'Self Help' for singer Olly Knight's voice, they'll never make that mistake again. And a few more guitar solos mightn't hurt either.
