US actor Merlin Santana shot dead

The actor Merlin Santana, who recently starred with Eddie Murphy and Robert De Niro in the film 'Showtime', has been shot dead in Los Angeles.

Santana, who was 26, was shot dead as he sat in the passenger seat of a parked car at about 2.30am local time.

He played Hector in 'Showtime' but was best-known in the US for his role as bumbling student Romeo in TV sitcom 'The Steve Harvey Show'.

Santana began his career with the role of Stanley, an 8-year-old admirer of Rudy Huxtable in TV's 'The Cosby Show'.

No-one has been arrested for the murder and police have said the motive is unclear.
