Cork chosen as European City of Culture for 2005

The city of Cork has been chosen as European City of Culture in 2005.

A panel of European judges selected Ireland's second city ahead of Galway, which mounted stiff competition for the title.

As winning city, Cork is expected to become the focus of European cultural activity for the year and will benefit to the tune of more than £5 million in EU funding.
