Arts Council issues Gate statement

The Arts Council has moved to clarify its position with the Gate Theatre following what it called the widespread misrepresentation of the relationship between the two bodies.

Earlier this year, the Gate became embroiled in a controversial funding row with the Arts Council.

In a statement today, the Arts Council points out that it has provided continuous assistance to the Gate since 1977.

Following extensive discussions between Gate and Arts Council staff, funding for the current year of just over £531,000 was offered by the Council in May and accepted a month later by the Gate.
