Great Blasket Island left to ruin during ten-year legal battle
Just over 12 months ago, the Supreme Court ruled that an attempt by the Government to develop the Great Blasket Island as a national park was unconstitutional. It brought the curtain down on a ten-year legal battle over the ownership of the island, by ruling that it rightfully belonged to a group of landowners who had acquired the island after it was evacuated in the 1950s. During this time, little if any preservation work was carried out on the buildings on the island, and the village is now in danger of collapse. One year on, there has been little progress and there is still no management plan for the island's future development.
