Irish are EU's top moviegoers - report

The Irish go to the cinema more often than people in any other EU country.

According to a study by the EU statistical office Eurostat, Irish people went to an average of 4.2 films each in 2001, with the Spanish next at 3.6%.

The highest grossing film in the EU, based on figures available for eleven member countries, was 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone'.

Two out of every three films seen by European audiences in 2001 were American.

The box office take of US movies in France was the lowest in the EU at 54%.
