In 1958 City Newsreel visited Glasthule, Co. Dublin for the turning on the lights ceremony.

The Christmas lights were organised by the Sandycove and Glasthule Traders Association. Seán O'Briain, Chairman of the Traders Association, spoke to City Newsreel about the first public lighting ceremony.

The 25 traders of the area raised over £100 to make this stretch of road a blaze of lights.

Alfie Sweeney, President of the Dun Laoghaire Chamber of Commerce, comments that this is a great display of community cooperation in Glasthule. He also talks about the future plans for Dun Laoghaire.

The lights were switched on by Mrs. Tallon who says she is honoured to do so.
