Minister for Communications launches the first terrestrial high definition television coverage of a sporting event in Ireland.

The Minister for Communications Eamon Ryan launches the first terrestrial broadcast of an Irish sporting event in high definition television (HDTV).

The Leinster Football final at Croke Park was chosen as the first broadcast of its kind in Ireland. Mr Ryan said the trial demonstrated the clear benefits of a digital TV platform over the present analogue network. High definition television is available to a limited degree on satellite but this was the first time it was performed from a digital terrestrial network in Ireland.
