The 50th anniversary of the Easter Rising was commemorated by a number of official events in 1966. The week of ceremonies began with President Eamon de Valera taking a salute from units of the Defence Forces at the General Post Office in O'Connell Street.

Both radio and television gave wide coverage of the week of ceremonies commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Easter Rising.

The week of ceremonies began with a reading of the Proclamation of the Republic at the General Post Office, Dublin, followed by a military parade. In the presence of a distinguished gathering, including many survivors of the Rising, President, Eamon de Valera, took a salute as units of the Defence Forces converged on O'Connell Street from points associated with the different garrisons of Easter Week and marched past the GPO.
