Heaney wrote an elegy, 'The Strand at Lough Beg', after his second cousin Colum McCartney was shot and killed in 1975. In this extract, he reads a later poem from 'Station Island' that deals directly with the violence of this death.
‘Appraisal’ was a radio arts magazine, presented by Des Hickey. It was first broadcast on 23 February 1972, in a weekly slot on Radio Éireann. According to the RTÉ Guide, it aimed to “give a general flavour of what is happening in the theatre, in music, dance, cinema, mime, poetry and even books throughout the whole country” (16 May 1986, p. 12). It used a large panel of experts to review and discuss work.
‘Appraisal’ was incorporated into ‘The Arts’ in 1973, becoming a fortnightly programme until 15 October 1980, when it reverted to weekly. It ended on 8 September 1988.
The accompanying image of Seamus Heaney appeared on p.10 of the RTÉ Guide on 12 April 1996.
