Heaney receives the David Cohen Prize for Literature.

Shortly before his 70th birthday, Heaney was awarded the David Cohen Prize for Literature in recognition of the "sheer scale" of his literary achivements. The prize is given every two years to a writer from Britain or Ireland in recognition of a lifetime's achievement. The judges, chaired by British poet laureate Andrew Motion, felt that Heaney was an obvious choice.

Heaney nominated Poetry Aloud, an annual poetry-speaking schools competition, as the recipient of a secondary prize.
