Orla Kiely recalls how she was encouraged by her parents and inspired by her artistic grandmother to develop a creative side.

Fashion designer Orla Kiely is well-known for her colourful handbags and 1960s-style prints. Her dresses have had a lot of public exposure in recent years from Kate Middleton and her mother Carole, who have both been photographed wearing them. Carole Middleton wore an Orla Kiely dress when she went to visit her grandson Prince George of Cambridge for the first time in hospital, an event watched by millions of television viewers.

Orla Kiely is based in London but grew up in Shankill, Co. Dublin. She recalls her childhood in this radio interview with Miriam O’Callaghan. Orla loved art as a child and was encouraged by her parents and a teacher at school to develop her creative side. She likes to think she takes after her artistic grandmother. She got her taste in colour from the Irish landscape.
