In 1972 Pat Rabbitte addresses crowds of student protesters at Leinster House.

A 23 year old Pat Rabbitte in the position as President of the National Union of Students in Ireland (USI). Rabbitte held this position between 1972 and 1974 having previously served as the President of the UCG (University College Galway) Students' Union.

During a student protest over the low level of higher education grants, Pat Rabbitte addresses students at Leinster House. The demonstration brings traffic in Dublin city centre to a standstill. Similar protests are held in Cork, Limerick, Sligo, Waterford and Galway in favour of extending student grants to colleges of technology.

Pat Rabbitte went on to become an official in the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union (ITGWU). In 1989 Rabbitte was elected to Dáil Éireann as a TD for the Workers' Party and has kept his seat at every election since as a Workers' Party TD, then a Democratic Left TD and now as a Labour TD. Since 2011 he has held the position as Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, as part of the Fine Gael/Labour coalition government.
