President Kennedy receives an honorary doctorate of law from the NUI in Dublin Castle.

After his address to the Dáil, President Kennedy went to St Patrick’s Hall in Dublin Castle to receive two honorary degrees and the freedom of the city. This extract is taken from the live coverage of the event and shows him receiving one of the degrees, an honorary doctorate of law from the National University of Ireland.

Before the actual conferring, the president of UCD Dr Michael Tierney talks about the history of the NUI and delves into the genealogy and family history of the Kennedy family. He says that President Kennedy’s father Joseph was awarded the very same honorary degree in 1938, when he was US ambassador to London.

As Chancellor of the University, Éamon de Valera presents President Kennedy with the degree.
