  • Extended description

In 1990, Mary Robinson became Ireland's first female president. Brian Farrell interviewed her almost five years into her term about the main issues she had addressed: community development, the progress of women, the peace process, human rights and international responsibility.

In this TV clip, Mary Robinson talks about what her presidency has meant for women. She is glad that her election has boosted women's confidence and emphasises the importance of confidence. As women seek to play a greater role in society, men will have to take on more responsibility in the home, which will be difficult for some. But she feels that this change will be for the benefit of humanity. She listens to and respects all viewpoints, including those of conservative women.
