  • Extended description

Colm Murray heads to Thurles to meet horse racing commentator Des Scahill at work. Des Scahill describes how he goes about preparing for each race and recalls his commentaries when Secreto won the Epsom Derby and Dawn Run won the Gold Cup.

Recalling his commentary on Dawn Run's win Des Scahill says, "A lot of people think that I got very excited because I had so much money on Dawn Run but nothing could be further from the truth I didn't have six pence on her."

For Des Scahill it is the commentators job to put the excitement into the emotion of the occasion for the listeners.

  • Information

The clip shown here is edited from footage recorded for a RTÉ News report that was never broadcast. The report was to be part of a preview of the 2001 Cheltenham Festival, but the foot and mouth outbreak of that year meant that Irish horses did not travel.

The accompanying image shows Gold Cup winner Dawn Run with trainer Paddy Mullins.
