- Extended description
Striking journalists are producing 'The Belfast Times', a four-page tabloid for ten pence a copy. They describe it as a comprehensive newspaper with news, features and sport. It is not a mere strike sheet about their five-week dispute.
The journalists work for 'The Morning Irish News', 'The Evening Belfast Telegraph' and 'The Sunday News'. These newspapers have been appearing throughout the strike in reduced form, prepared single-handedly by their editors.
However, the striking journalists hope that the reappearance of popular columnists will go down well with their reading public. John Kaplin of 'The Belfast Telegraph' is the newspaper's editor. He says that they intend to produce 'The Belfast Times' daily until the strike is over.
A RTÉ News report from 10 January 1979.
