RTÉ News reports on the scenes at the end of the day that saw the arrival of British soldiers in Derry city.

The troops arrival has helped to defuse a very tense situation but only because the troops have replaced the hated 'B' Specials and the police.

Eddie McAteer commented "I don't like British troops but they're better than the specials".

The troops are positioned at a series of flashpoints around junctions leading into the Bogside. The Bogside barricades are still in position but no stones or petrol bombs have been thrown since the police withdrawal.

Tom McCaughren reports from the Bogside where crowds cheered as the police withdrew and troops took over. The crowd felt that they had scored a victory over the police and the 'B' Specials. McCaughren describes the scenes as the crowds disband.
