Sean Duignan and Andy O'Mahony report on the election of 21-year-old Bernadette Devlin as MP for Mid-Ulster. A tired Devlin declares that, "People of Mid Ulster, we have finally started to overcome."
Bernadette Devlin will leave for Westminster on Monday, two days before her 22nd birthday. Devlin plans to take part in a victory rally in Carrickmore tonight and tomorrow she will address a civil rights meeting in Lurgan.
Devlin beat her competitor, Anna Forrest, by more than 4,000 votes and is now the Mid-Ulster MP for Westminster.
Devlin says that her first task at Westminster is to argue the case for the people versus the party. She goes on to say that the Unionist Party has "divided, betrayed and mislead the people".
Ultimately, Devlin hopes to achieve a society that allows for civil and religious liberty, equal rights and equal opportunities. - Information
