    An extract from the opening of the programme where Kevin O'Kelly sets the scene in Northern Ireland prior to the general election in February 1969.

    The programme begins at Stormont in the lead up to the general election of Feburary 1969. Kevin O'Kelly appears sitting on the front bench at Stormont, where the Prime Minister normally sits. O'Kelly discusses how the division in the country is reflected in the parliament and how this is also echoed through the ordinary people on the streets of Belfast.

    For months, Northern Ireland had been making headlines across the world. A society divided by religion and politics now faced a general election.

    RTÉ radio and television had been covering the situation north of the border ever since the outbreak of unrest. This clip is taken from the television programme listed as 'Northern Ireland A Film Special'. The programme was presented by Kevin O'Kelly and produced by RTÉ News. O'Kelly looks at the issues in the lead up to an elections and speaks to residents of the Shankill and Falls Roads to gauge the mood across the religious and political divide.
