Pat Sweeney describes the streets as full of broken glass every shop window on the street smashed. The violence involved the crowds throwing stones at the police and the police retaliating by throwing them back. The police were also equipped with a water cannon and batons.

A RTÉ News report on the violence in Derry following the civil rights demonstration. This report by Pat Sweeney was broadcast on 6 October, 1968.
The photograph accompanying this clip shows a general view of Derry city, with the Craigavon Bridge in the foreground, in May 1969. This photograph was taken during a shoot to gain stock shots of Northern Ireland, for possible use in RTÉ News bulletins.
The photographer was Peter Dorney.
