This veteran of the Irish Guards who was stationed in Essex, says the first his battalion knew of the rising in Dublin was seeing it on newspaper bill boards on Easter Monday 1916.
After initial anger over events in Ireland he and colleagues were too preoccupied with what lay in front of them to worry about events in Ireland.
'The Irish Brigades In The First World War' was a two part documentary for radio. The programme examined the participation of the Irish Brigades in the Great War using personal accounts of the battles from surviving members.
The documentary was produced by Kieran Sheedy and presented by Tom McGurk. The clip used here was taken from part two and broadcast on 8 December 1974.
The photograph accompanying this clip shows the destruction in O'Connell Street following the Easter Rising in 1916.
The photographer was Joseph Cashman.
