During wartime, extreme measures were sometimes undertaken by light fingered troops who wanted to sample the local wines, as Major Walter Joyce of the Irish Guards tells Jim Fahy.

Major Walter Joyce tells Jim Fahy about comrades who stole mules from the supply line and then sold them to a local farmer so they could buy wine. When suspicion came upon the men they stole the mules back from the farmer and returned them to the supply line.
Major Joyce explains that one of these same men showed incredible bravery at the battle of Suvla Bay in Turkey.

'Looking West' was a series presented by Jim Fahy looking at people, places and events in the west of Ireland.
The photograph accompanying this clip shows soldiers buying goods from local people at Etaples in northern France.
