Jack Campbell describes the fighting which took place in open country during the early days fo the war.
Retreating from Mons became a test of endurance as the men were given ten minutes rest every hour. What rest was given during the night depeneded on how near the advancing German army was. After a few days marching the men began to have hallucinations because of the lack of rest.
In the series 'Another Terrible Beauty' seventy five years after the Armistice Myles Dungan looked at the Irish role in the First World War.
