What is food irradiation?

This episode of 'Nature of Things' explores the topic of Food Irradiation.

Food irradiation is the process whereby foodstuffs are exposed to a source of energy capable of stripping electrons from individual atoms. The process is used as a method of food preservation by reducing the risk of food borne illness, preventing the spread of invasive pests, and eliminating ripening.

Strict regulations now dictate how food is to be irradiated, as well as the food allowed to be irradiated.

Nature of Things was a science programme which ran on RTÉ One Television from October 1989 to September 1991.

This episode of 'Nature of Things' was broadcast on 22 March 1990.
