John Giles resigns as manager of the Republic of Ireland's soccer team following a disagreement with the Football Association of Ireland (FAI).

John Giles tells RTÉ News the reasons for the decision to step down as Republic of Ireland football manager.

The disagreement surrounded John Giles seeking a backup team of five assistant managers, which he believes was a reasonable request. Giles handed in his notice when the FAI refused to allow his request to have Ray Treacy and Eamon Dunphy as two of his assistants.

While Giles had spent the summer in the US working with an American club, he claims that this did not impact on his work with the Irish team and the FAI.
