Actor Gabriel Byrne is conferred with an honorary doctorate at the National University of Ireland Galway.
The Dublin-born, Hollywood actor Gabriel Byrne paid a visit to Galway to receive an honorary degree at the National University of Ireland Galway (NUI Galway).
For many years Byrne lived outside Craughwell in County Galway, and his family have close ties with the county.
As part of the winter graduation ceremony for over 800 students, the President of NUI Galway, Dr Iognáid Ó Muircheartaigh conferred the actor with a Doctor of Arts in recognition of his outstanding contribution to Irish and international film.
Gabriel Byrne is visibly moved to have been honoured in such a manner by the university.
When I said it was a great honour I meant it.
He finds it difficult to express in words how much the honour means to him.
To actually say it somehow diminishes it, but it really does mean something to me, and I will always value it.
