Ahead of the introduction of VAT 'Hall's Pictorial Weekly' asks people what they know about this new tax if anything at all.

Value Added Tax (VAT) was introduced in Ireland on 1 November 1972.VAT is an indirect tax levied on products and services and will have a direct impact on the pockets of consumers. It was introduced as part of Ireland's entry to the European Economic Community (EEC). But how much do they know about this tax?

In general, there appears to be a complete lack of understanding about what this new tax is and how it will affect people.

I don't understand it at all.

Isn't it being put on soap and things like that?

I don't know what it means.

I don't know anything about it.

This episode of 'Hall's Pictorial Weekly' was broadcast on 28 October 1972.
