The 12th Castlebar International Song Contest is presented by Terry Wogan.

Terry Wogan presents the 12th Castlebar International Song Contest from the ballroom of the Travellers Friend Hotel in Castlebar, County Mayo. He praises the hard work and dedication behind the contest which gets bigger and better every year.

It is the most successful international song contest in Britain or Ireland; it is the only international song contest in Britain or Ireland.

The song contest, financed by the Bórd Fáilte, RTÉ and Berger Paints attracted 1,100 entries from 35 different countries, all hoping to win  the £3,000 first prize. From these, 24 songs were in competition and nine songs were selected to be performed in the grand final, broadcast simultaneously on RTÉ Television and RTÉ Radio in stereo.

On the night, the orchestra is conducted by RTÉ conductor Noel Kelehan with special guest performances by clarinettist Acker Bilk and actress Gemma Craven.

The winning song 'You Are My Destiny' was written by John Brown, Dana's brother, and sung by him with Mary Clifford. Songs from Britain and Hungary came second and third respectively.

After the opening of Telefís Éireann (RTÉ Television) in late 1961, Terry Wogan worked on many programmes at the station, before leaving Ireland to join the BBC full-time in 1969.

The Castlebar International Song Contest was broadcast on 7 October 1977.
