Druid Theatre Company stage 'The Playboy of the Western World' during the Dublin Theatre Festival.
Directed by Gary Hynes this production John Millington Synge's 'The Playboy of the Western World' features Bríd Brennan as Pegeen Mike, Michael Lally as Old Man, Maeliosa Stafford as the Playboy, and the Widow Quinn is played by Marie Mullen.
This is the first production of 'The Playboy of the Western World' in Dublin for some time, but it is the third time in seven years that Druid Theatre Company have produced the play. Garry Hynes, Druid’s founder and director, talks about the company’s prior experiences of performing ‘The Playboy of the Western World’. She agrees with interviewer Patrick Gallagher’s suggestion that producing the play more than once is a bit like an excavation of Synge’s work,
We are discovering the resonances of the play extend very wide indeed, that as each time you do a scene, that there are other ways to interpret it, that suggest other things, and that it’s possible to constantly explore the play. It’s amazing, because I haven’t really found it with any other play, in quite the same way.
