Stephen Roche wins the UCI World Road Championships in Villach, Austria to complete the Triple Crown of cycling.

This win completed a remarkable season adding to his victories in the Grand Tours or the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France. Belgian Eddy Merckx is the only other cyclist to achieve all three wins in the one year.

A victorious Stephen Roche spoke to 'Morning Ireland' following the race and describes how this somewhat unexpected win came about and the support he received from his fellow Irish riders Sean Kelly, Martin Early and Paul Kimmage. This win means Roche has matched something only Eddy Merckx achieved but he jokes,

Eddy Mercks never won the Rás.
