Hiking and dancing are among the activities for the weekend at the Glendalough youth hostel in the Wicklow mountains.
'Broadsheet' visits one of the favourite places of the 'An Óige' movement at Glendalough, County Wicklow. An Óige, is the Irish Youth Hostel Association. Reporter PP O'Reilly and An Óige member Patricia Kennedy provide the commentary for this report about some of the organisations activities.
An Óige was established with the aims of fostering an appreciation of the countryside, of Irish heritage and of international cooperation. The provision of hostels would make all this possible. All of these objectives are demonstrated in this short film.
Glendalough is a favourite destinations for members of An Óige, partly because of its ease of access from Dublin city. A group of hikers make their way from the An Óige hostel down to the lake. An impromptu céilí dance takes place on a wooden bridge. As the young people hike around the lake, Patricia describes the route, tells some stories about Saint Kevin, and identifying the people she knows in the film.
This episode of 'Broadsheet' was broadcast on 23 April 1962. The reporter is PP O'Reilly
