Politicians Bertie Ahern, Richard Bruton and actor David Kelly paint pictures to be auctioned for the charity Energy Action.

Richard Bruton of Fine Gael has created a watercolour showing a bird perched on a blackberry branch with two butterflies. Having also submitted a painting for auction the previous year, this is his second attempt at painting. Commenting on his work, he says

There's an artist in every politician.

David Kelly has experience as a painter having attended the National College of Art in 1946. His work is also a watercolour and a landscape of a church in Deia, Majorca. David says he paints to relax and

It saves me getting any madder than I am.

Minister for Finance Bertie Ahern's painting features numbers in blue and orange which he painted during lunchtime. Describing his work as representing the symbols of balance and money, he says

It's all about balancing the books.

Other well-known faces also put brush to canvas for the charity auction including Shay Healy himself, RTÉ broadcaster John Creedon, and actors Cyril Cusack and Emmet Bergin.

Energy Action was set up to alleviate fuel poverty by insulating the houses of the disadvantaged back in 1988.

This episode of 'Nighthawks' was broadcast on 8 April 1992. The presenter is Shay Healy.
