Members of the Traveller community organise a 10K run to raise money for people in developing countries.

The event held in the Phoenix Park was aimed at showing that Travellers can do something for people whose circumstances are worse than their own. Money raised from the race will be donated to Trócaire.

The Lord Mayor of Dublin Bertie Ahern started the race, and the runners received words of encouragement from Bishop Eamon Casey.

Organiser of the event Augustine Sweeney explains why members of the Travelling Community are taking part in this event,

If we all examine our consciences, I think we’ll find that none of us have been doing what we can be doing, and that’s basically the idea... I wanted people who receive charity to show that even we can give something, even if it’s a little.

Michael Collins from Finglas in north Dublin was first to cross the finish line, with his cousin Martin Collins in second place.
