A first for Irish politics as debates in the Seanad are recorded for broadcast.

A Seanad debate on the Control of Clinical Trials Bill was recorded and highlights from it broadcast on RTÉ Radio 1 later that night. At the moment there can only be live broadcasts from the Seanad. RTÉ is hoping that approval will be given soon for occasional live broadcasts from the Dáil. Oireachtas Broadcasting will run initially for a trial period of one year.

John V Halloran Head of the Oireachtas Broadcasting Unit explains what will have to happen before live broadcasting from the house of deputies can take place

There is no provision for live broadcasting. If we want to go live another motion would have to be passed by the Dáíl.

Politicians Jim Brady and Sean Barrett both welcome the development. Leader of the House Sean Barrett says,

I think it gives the public an opportunity of hearing what their elected representatives are saying.

Jimmy Wogan and Mick Nolan of RTÉ radio can be seen at work in the studio.

An RTÉ News report by Michael Ronayne broadcast on 8 October 1986.
