Ardal O'Hanlon who plays Father Dougal McGuire in the sitcom 'Father Ted' talks to Gay Byrne about the inspiration behind the character.

Did you model Father Dougal on anybody that we might know?

Ardal jokingly says that there are a lot of people who influenced the character including members of his family, people from Monaghan, a lot of friends and one of the writers Graham Linehan.

You just try and make it as funny as you can.

He also jokes about the number of retakes while filming in front of a live audience blaming Dermot Morgan who plays Father Ted Crilly. 'Father Ted' also starred Frank Kelly as Father Jack Hackett and Pauline McGlynn as Mrs Doyle.

This episode of 'The Late Late Show' presented by Gay Byrne was broadcast on 6 September 1996.
